In the summer of 2014, out of a serious situation, came a desire for “Whimsy”.
Whimsy is a letting go of Self and to get out of one’s Life, at least for a while! Now, Whimsy has become a seriously important part of The Institute for the Shamanic Arts’ repertoire of Sacredness~
Adults can have a difficult time seeing the power of being whimsical. Here are ideas we hear often…
I would be embarrassed.
Do I have a whimsical self?
That’s silly.
Get serious. Be real.
I don’t have anything to wear.
I’ll feel like a fool.
To dress up in a fantastical fashion with a few whimsical friends, to walk amongst the people with drumbeat and bell, to smile and blow bubbles at the people of the crowd in a caring way, is liberating and enlightening.
If you still are not convinced that “Whimsy” is something meaningful… Look at the origin of the word~
“Whim” or “whimsy” is a sophisticated (in its purity and innocence) form of humor. In fact, the word “humor” used to relate only to bodily fluids-the humors, until “whim” was introduced.
The original sense was ‘bodily fluid’ (surviving in aqueous humor and vitreous humor, fluids in the eyeball); it was used specifically for any of the cardinal humors (sense 3 of the noun), whence ‘mental disposition’ (thought to be caused by the relative proportions of the humors). This led, in the 16th century, to the senses ‘state of mind, mood’ (sense 2 of the noun) and ‘whim, fancy,’ hence to humor someone ‘to indulge a person’s whim. (From Online Etymology.)
